Crochet Rosewater Rectangle Shawl Wrap - Free Pattern

Meet the Rosewater Shawl, a beautiful crochet rectangle shawl with delicate openwork and a lovely, lightweight drape.

It's a relaxing project to crochet and can be worn in several different ways. I love the soft, feminine look of this design and I hope you enjoy making it as much as I did.

To make this shawl, you should be familiar with basic crochet stitches and terminology. All you need to start is one skein of your favourite fingering weight yarn (I used one skein of YarnArt Flowers gradient ''cake'' yarn) and a 4 mm crochet hook.

Written Pattern

Finished Size: The shawl measures 52 cm x 176 cm (20,5’’ x 69,3’’) after blocking.

Gauge: 10 stitches = 5 cm (2’’) in double crochet, 1 pattern repeat (Rows 4 – 17) = 18 cm (7’’) in height, after blocking.

Skill Level: Easy to Intermediate - advanced beginner.

Materials Used:

Fingering weight yarn, size 1 - super fine. I used YarnArt Flowers            (250g/ 1000m) 55% cotton, 45% acrylic yarn in color 305. 1 skein of yarn needed    for this pattern.

4.0 mm (US size G/6) crochet hook.

Scissors.

Measuring tape.

Yarn needle or a latch hook.

Abbreviations (US terms):

st(s) - stitch(es)
ch sp(s) - chain space(s)
ch - chain

sc - single crochet
dc - double crochet

V-st - V stitch (1dc, ch1, 1dc) worked in same stitch or chain space

(  )* – repeat instructions between the parentheses as directed.

( ) - stitch count for each row is listed in italic parentheses at the end of each row.

RS – right side – the front side of the work.

WS – wrong side – the back side of the work.

Pattern Notes:

•  The shawl is worked sideways in back and forth rows to form a rectangle. After the main body is completed, yarn is joined to the foundation chain edge and Rows 4 – 7 of the stitch pattern are worked to create matching ends.
•  To adjust the shawl size, increase or decrease the number of foundation chains in multiples of 4 + 3. The length can be adjusted by working more or fewer pattern repeats (Rows 4 – 17).
• The sample shawl uses one full cake of YarnArt Flowers. If you make a larger shawl, you will need additional yarn.
•  Beginning (turning) ch3 counts as 1 dc throughout the pattern.
•  Blocking is recommended to enhance stitch definition and shape.

Instructions

Before you begin: Measure and set aside approximately 32 meters (35 yards) of yarn from beginning of the cake (of yarn unworked). This reserved yarn will be used to work rows along the foundation edge after the shawl is complete, allowing to match the colors at the beginning of the shawl.
If you are using a solid color yarn, you can skip this step. Reserving yarn is only necessary when using a gradient yarn cake.

Main Body

Foundation chain: ch107

Row 1 (RS): 1 dc in 4th ch from hook and each ch across. 

(105 dc including ch3 at the beginning of row)

Row 2 (WS): ch3 (counts as 1 dc), turn, skip first st, 1 dc in next st,

(ch1, skip next st, 1 dc in next st)* repeat until turning ch3 from previous row remains. 1 dc in the top of turning ch3 (in 3rd ch of turning ch3). 

(54 dc, 51 ch1 sps)

Row 3 (RS): ch3 (counts as 1 dc), turn, skip first st, 1 dc in next st,

(1 dc in next ch1 sp, 1 dc in next st)* repeat until turning ch3 from previous row remains. 1 dc in the top of turning ch3. 

(105 dc)

Row 4 (WS): ch3 (counts as 1 dc), turn, skip first and next st, V-st in next st.,

(ch1, skip next 3 sts, V-st in next st)* repeat until 1 st and turning ch3 from previous row remain. Skip next st, 1 dc in the top of turning ch3. 

(26 V-sts, 2 dc, 25 ch1 sps between V-sts only)

Row 5 (RS): ch3 (counts as 1 dc), turn, skip first st, V-st in ch1 sp of next V-st, ch2, 1 sc in next ch1 sp

between V-sts,

(ch2, V-st in ch1 sp of next V-st, ch2, 1 sc in next ch1 sp between V-sts)* repeat until 1 V-st and turning ch3 from previous row remain.

Ch2, V-st in ch1 sp of next V-st, 1 dc in the top of turning ch3. 

(26 V-sts, 2 dc, 25 sc, 50 ch2 sps)

Row 6 (WS): ch3 (counts as 1 dc), turn, skip first st, V-st in ch1 sp of next V-st,

(ch1, V-st in ch1 sp of next V-st)* repeat until turning ch3 from previous row remains. 1 dc in the top of turning ch3. 

(26 V-sts, 2 dc, 25 ch1 sps between V-sts only)

Rows 7 – 14: repeat Rows 5 – 6 four more times

Row 15 (RS): ch3 (counts as 1 dc), turn, skip first st, 1 dc in first dc of next V-st, 1 dc in ch1 sp of same V-st, 1 dc in second dc of same V-st,

(1 dc in ch1 sp between V-sts, 1 dc in first dc of next V-st, 1 dc in ch1 sp of same V-st, 1 dc in second dc of same V-st)* repeat until turning ch3 from previous row remains. 1 dc in the top of turning ch3. 

(105 dc)

Row 16 (WS): work Row 2

Row 17 (RS): work Row 3

Rows 18 - 129: repeat Rows 4 – 17 eight more times.

Total of 9 pattern repeats.

Rows 130 – 134 (finishing rows): work Rows 4 – 7 once more to complete the shawl.

Fasten off.

Foundation Chain Edge

With the wrong side facing, join the reserved yarn to the opposite edge of the shawl at the foundation chain edge.

For the first row only, ch3 (counts as 1 dc), and work Row 4 across without turning. Then work Rows 5 – 7

as written. Fasten off and weave in all ends.
