Basic Winter Mittens - Free Crochet Pattern

This time I would like to share with you my Basic Winter Mittens crochet pattern.
The best part about these mittens is that they work up fairly quickly and will keep you warm during the colder months.

Written Pattern:

Materials:

  • Worsted / DK weight yarn, size 4 /3 - medium. I used Audine Wools Bloom DK weight yarn (80% alpaca wool, 10% silk, 10% camel. 211m/100g) in the colorway Forget Me Not. 70 grams (148 meters approx.) of yarn needed for this pattern.
  • 4,5 mm ( US size 7) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Latch hook (optional)



Skill Level: Easy to Intermediate.

Size: The pattern is written in one size which will fit an average adult woman.
Width: 10 cm (4 inches)
Length including the cuff: 24 cm (9.5 inches)
Thumb length: 7 cm (2.8 inches)

Gauge: 7 stitches x 5.5 rows = 5cm (2 inches) in half double crochet


Abbreviations (US terms):

st./sts - stitch / stitches
sl st. – slip stitch
ch – chain
hdc – half double crochet
hdc2tog – 2 half double crochet closed together
dc – double crochet
fpdc - front post double crochet
bpdc - back post double crochet

Pattern Notes:

  • Mittens are crocheted in the round.
  • They are worked from the top down.
  • Both mittens (right and left) are worked exactly the same.
  • Ch1 and ch2 at the beginning of rounds do not count as stitches.




Instructions:

The Mitten (make 2):

Start with ch4, sl st. into first ch to form a ring.

Round 1: ch1, 7hdc into ring. Join with a sl st. into first hdc. (7 sts)

Round 2: ch1, 2hdc into each st. around. Join with a sl st. into first hdc. (14 sts)

Round 3: ch1, 1hdc into same st., 2hdc into next st. 
(1hdc into next st., 2hdc into next st.)* repeat 6 times around. Join with a sl st. into first hdc. (21 sts)

Round 4: ch1, 1hdc into same st., 1hdc into next st., 2hdc into next st.,
(1hdc into next 2 sts, 2hdc into next st.)* repeat 6 times around. Join with a sl st. into first hdc. (28 sts)

Round 5 - 14: ch1, 1hdc into each st. around. Join with a sl st. into first hdc. 
(28 sts)


Round 15 (Creating the thumb hole): ch1, 1hdc into each st. (25 sts) until you have 3 sts left, ch5. Join with a sl st. into first hdc. 

Round 16: ch1, 1hdc into each st. and into each ch st. around. Join with a sl st. into first hdc. (30 sts)

Round 17: ch1, 1hdc into each st. around. Join with a sl st. into first hdc. 
(30 sts)

Round 18: ch1, skip first st., 1hdc into each st. around. Join with a sl st. into first hdc. (29 sts)

Round 19: ch1, skip first st., 1hdc into each st. around. Join with a sl st. into first hdc. (28 sts)

Round 20: ch1, skip first st., 1hdc into each st. around. Join with a sl st. into first hdc. (27 sts)

Round 21: ch1, skip first st., 1hdc into each st. around. Join with a sl st. into first hdc. (26 sts)

Round 22: ch2, 1dc into each st. around. Join with a sl st. into first dc. (26 sts)

Round 23 - 26 (The cuff): ch2, 1fpdc into first st., 1bpdc into next st., 
(1fpdc into next st., 1bpdc into next st.)* repeat 12 times around. Join with a sl st. into first fpdc. (26 sts)


The thumb:

Join the yarn to any st. of the thumb hole opening.

Round 1: ch1, 13hdc evenly around. Join with a sl st. into first hdc. (13 sts)
Some of the stitches may not be into a stitch, they may be worked into stitch posts.

Round 2 - 5: ch1, 1hdc into each st. around. Join with a sl st. into first hdc. 
(13 sts)

Round 6: ch1, 1hdc into same st., hdc2tog over next 2 sts, 
(1hdc into next st., hdc2tog over next 2 sts)* repeat 3 times around, 1hdc into last st. Join with a sl st. into first hdc. (9 sts)

Round 7: ch1, skip first st., 1hdc into next st., (hdc2tog over next 2 sts)* repeat 3 times, 1hdc into last st. Join with a sl st. into first hdc. (5 sts)

Finish off leaving a long tale. Close the top of the thumb by weaving the yarn tail through each stitch around the top using a yarn needle. Pull it to close the hole, fasten off and weave it inside the thumb.

Weave in all ends using a yarn needle or latch hook.
