Sunset Flower Square Motif - Free Crochet Pattern



Hello everyone!πŸ™‚ 

Today i am sharing the Sunset Flower Square motif crochet pattern with you. There is a twelve - petaled crochet flower at the center of this square. These motifs can be worked into many projects like table runners, blankets, shawls, dresses, tops, etc. - the possibilities are endless.

Written Pattern:

Size: The motif measures approximately 11 cm x 11 cm (4.3 inches x 4.3 inches).

Skill Level: Easy to Intermediate.

Materials Used:



Abbreviations (US terms):

st. - stitch
ch - chain
sl st. - slip stitch
sc - single crochet
hdc - half double crochet
dc - double crochet
trc - treble crochet

()* - repeat the instructions between the brackets number of times indicated.

How To Crochet The Square Motif



Start with ch5. Join with a sl st. into first ch to form a ring.

Round 1: ch3 (counts as a dc), ch1, 
(1dc, ch1)* repeat 11 times into the ring.
Join with a sl st. on top of the ch3.

Round 2: sl st. into next ch1 space, ch1, 1sc into that same ch1 space, 
(ch3, 1sc into next ch1 space)* repeat 11 times around.
Join with ch1 + 1hdc into first sc.



Round 3: ch6, 1dc into 4th ch from hook, 1dc into next 2 ch sts, 
(1dc into next ch3 space, ch3 (counts as a dc), 3dc around that 1dc post)* repeat 11 times around.
Join with a sl st. into 3rd ch st.
                                                                               



Round 4: sl st. into next 3 ch sts, ch1, 1sc into same st., 
(ch5, 1sc into 3rd ch st.)* repeat 11 times around.
Join with ch2 + 1dc into first sc.

Round 5: ch1, 1sc into that (ch2 + 1dc) space of the previous round, (6trc, ch5, 6trc) into next ch5 space, 1sc into next ch5 space, ch7,
(1sc into next ch5 space, (6trc, ch5, 6trc) into next ch5 space, 1sc into next ch5 space, ch7)* repeat 3 times around.
Join with a sl st. into first sc.



Ch1, cut off the yarn, fasten off and weave in the ends. 



How To Crochet The Half Square Motif


Row 1: ch5, 1dc into first ch, 
(ch1, 1dc into that same first ch of ch5)* repeat 5 times.

Row 2: turn, (ch3, 1sc into next ch1 space)* repeat 5 times.
ch1, 1hdc on top of the beginning ch3 of Row 1.

Row 3: turn, ch6, 1dc into 4th ch from hook, 1dc into next 2 ch sts, 
(1dc into next ch3 space, ch3 (counts as a dc), 3dc around that 1dc post)* repeat 4 times.
1dc into 2nd ch st. of next ch3, ch3 (counts as a dc), 2dc around that 1dc post, 1dc into the base of the first dc.

Row 4: turn, ch5, skip next 2 dc sts, 1sc into next ch st.,
(ch5, skip next 2 ch sts, skip next 4 dc sts, 1sc into next ch st.)* repeat 5 times.
ch2, skip next 2 ch sts, 1dc into next ch st.

Row 5: turn, ch4 (counts as a trc), ch4, 6trc into that (ch2 + 1dc) space of the previous row, 1sc into next ch5 space, ch7, 1sc into next ch5 space, (6trc, ch5, 6trc) into next ch5 space, 1sc into next ch5 space, ch7, 1sc into next ch5 space, 6trc into next ch5 space, ch4, 1trc into 3rd ch of that ch5 of the previous row.

Ch1, cut off the yarn, fasten off and weave in the ends. 


How To Join The Squares (Join As You Go Method)



The square motifs are joined at ch7 and ch5 spaces in the last round.
We are going to join the motifs together while working the last round
Start with one completed motif. 
Crochet the second motif until you finish the Round 4

Start crocheting the Round 5: ch1, 1sc into (ch2 + 1dc) space of the previous round, 6trc into next ch5 space, ch3,



Drop the loop of the hook, insert hook from front to back into ch5 space of the first motif’s final round. Pick up the loop and pull it through the ch5 space. 

Ch2,

6trc into that same ch5 space, 1sc into next ch5 space, ch4,
Drop the loop of the hook, insert hook from front to back into ch7 space of the first motif’s final round. Pick up the loop and pull it through the ch7 space.

ch3, 1sc into next ch5 space, 

6trc into next ch5 space, ch3,
Drop the loop of the hook, insert hook from front to back into ch5 space of the first motif’s final round. Pick up the loop and pull it through the ch5 space. 
ch2, 6trc into that same ch5 space.

Finish the motif you are working on to the end of the round and fasten off.




Shared Corner Join 

This join takes place where motifs 1 and 2 are already joined. Follow the previous steps in the same way until you get to the corner join area. 
Ch3, drop the loop of the hook, insert hook into corner from front to back where motifs 1 and 2 are joined. Pick up a loop and pull it through. 

Ch2, 6trc into ch5 space.

Finish the motif you are working on to the end of the round and fasten off. 


Continue following the previous steps in the same way until all motifs are joined together. The corner join of 4th motif takes place where motifs 1, 2 and 3 are already joined.

Skill Level: Easy to Intermediate

Materials Used:
  • Sport weight mercerized 100% cotton yarn, size 2 – fine. I used Madame Tricote Paris Camilla yarn in the colorways 5329 (light green) and 4917 (light blue). 11 grams of yarn needed for this pattern. 
  • 3mm crochet hook.
  • Scissors.
  • Yarn needle or Latch hook for weaving in ends. Or, you can use a crochet hook.


Abbreviations (US terms):

st. - stitch
ch - chain
sl st. - slip stitch
sc - single crochet
hdc - half double crochet
dc - double crochet

The doily measures approximately 25cm (9.8 inches) in diameter.

Skill Level:
Easy to Intermediate

Materials Used:

  • Sport weight mercerized cotton yarn, size 2 - fine. I used Madame Tricote Paris Camilla yarn in the colorway 6312 (pink). 30 grams of yarn needed for this pattern.
  • 3 mm crochet hook.
  • Scissors.
  • Yarn needle or Latch hook for weaving in ends. Or, you can use a crochet hook.


Abbreviations (US terms)
st. - stitch
ch - chain
sl st. - slip stitch
sc - single crochet
dc - double crochet
trc - treble crochet

V stitch – (1dc, ch1, 1dc) into the same stitch (space). 

Ch3picot – ch3, insert the hook into the first ch, yarn over, pull through all loops on the hook.

Start with a magic (adjustable) ring; Or, ch5 and join with a sl st. into the first ch to form a ring.

Join with a sl st. on top of the ch3.

Round 9: sl st. into next ch1 space, ch4 (counts as a trc), (ch1, 1trc)* repeat 6 times into that same ch1 space (V stitch), ch1, skip 1V stitch, 1sc into the next V stitch, ch1, 
(skip 1V stitch, (1trc, ch1)* repeat 7 times into the next V stitch, skip 1V stitch, 1sc into the next V stitch, ch1)* repeat 11 times around. 
Join with a sl st. on top of the ch4.
